Delete an AI girlfriend app account: cancel is not it

Three buttons look like the exit: uninstall, cancel, delete. Only one of them touches your conversations, and the difference is cheaper to learn before you pay than after.

A three-row grid of small glyphs, a phone, a coin and a stack of bars, where one glyph in each row is drawn as an empty outline and the stack in the bottom row is emptied in deep pink

You have decided you are done, or done paying, and the settings screen offers three things that all look like the way out: remove the app from your phone, stop the subscription, or delete the account. They sound like three degrees of one action. They are three different actions, and only one of them touches what you actually typed. If you want to delete an AI girlfriend app account rather than merely stop seeing it, that distinction is the whole thing — and it is far easier to check while you are still on a free tier than six weeks after your card went in.

Three buttons that look like the exit

Uninstalling removes the app from your device. It removes nothing from the company's servers, and on its own it does not stop a subscription — store billing lives in your store account, not in the app, so the charge keeps arriving for an app you no longer have. That is the most common expensive mistake here, and it is not specific to companion apps.

Cancelling stops the billing at the end of the period you have already paid for. It is done where the subscription was bought: if you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, you cancel in your store account rather than in the app, and Apple's own instructions for cancelling a subscription run entirely through your account settings. Cancelling ends the payments. It does not close the account and it does not delete a single message.

Deleting the account is the only one of the three that is about your data, and the only one that is genuinely awkward to find. It also does not reliably cancel anything: on many apps you can delete your in-app account while a store subscription quietly renews. So the order matters — cancel first, confirm it, then delete.

What cancelling leaves behind

Here is the part that surprises people. On most companion apps, cancelling does not close your account — it drops you to the free tier. You still have a login, the character is still there, and the conversation history is still on the server. What changed is your access to it, not its existence.

Two rows, each with a rounded bar on the left feeding a dashed line into an identical box holding three filled bars; the upper bar is solid and the lower one is an empty outline, and a deep-pink padlock sits on the lower box
cancelling moves the paywall, not the data

Often the long-term memory is what goes behind the paywall you just left. The app will tell you the character has forgotten, and from where you are sitting that is true. On the server the stored context is typically intact, waiting for you to resubscribe, which is why resubscribing three months later can feel like picking up mid-sentence. That is a reasonable product decision, and the clearest possible demonstration that locked is not deleted.

A dormant free account is not neutral. It is a login with your email attached, conversations you have stopped thinking about, and a row in a database subject to whatever the policy becomes next year — so the conversations outlive your interest in them. Our guide to switching apps covers the other half of this: what you lose in the move.

Where the button to delete an AI girlfriend app account has to be

It is in settings, usually under an "account" or "privacy" heading, near the bottom, two or three confirmations deep. If you cannot find it, both app stores now require it to exist. Google Play's policy for apps that let you create an account requires the developer to provide an in-app path to delete the account and associated data, and a web link where the same request can be made — the second specifically so that people who have already uninstalled can still get out. Apple's review guidelines have required account deletion inside the app since early 2022, and do not accept a deactivate-only option in its place.

Two practical consequences. If the app offers only "deactivate", "pause" or "hide my account", you have not found the delete button yet — under store rules a real one should be there. And if the app is already off your phone, you do not have to reinstall it: look for the deletion link on the developer's site or in the app's Play Store data safety section, which is where that web resource belongs.

If there is neither an in-app option nor a web route, the privacy policy should name an email address for deletion requests, and depending on where you live you may have a legal right to erasure to point at in the message. An app with no route at all has told you something about how it handles everything else.

What deletion removes, and what it does not

Pressing delete starts a process rather than completing one, and the limits are worth knowing.

Expect a grace period. Many apps hold the account in a recoverable state for a week or thirty days before erasing it, partly so an accidental deletion can be undone and partly to tempt you back. During that window the data is still there, so note the date and check that you cannot log back in afterwards.

Expect some retention. Google's own policy language acknowledges that an app may need to keep certain data for reasons like security, fraud prevention or legal compliance, and that it has to say so in its policy. In practice that usually means account identifiers, payment and tax records, and abuse logs survive the deletion of your conversations. A company keeping an invoice for seven years is complying with tax law, not hoarding your chat history.

Deleting the account is the only one of the three buttons that is about your data, and it is the only one the app makes hard to find. That is not a coincidence.

Expect training to be one-way. If the app used conversations to improve its models and yours were in that set, deletion removes your copy and does not reach back into a model already trained. That is the strongest argument for deciding what you are willing to type on day one rather than relying on retracting it later. Our privacy checklist is the version to read before you start.

Run the exit check before you pay

All of this is cheaper to establish on a free tier, in ten minutes, than at the point you want to leave. Four things to confirm before the card goes in:

  • The delete button exists, and says "delete". Open settings and find it. You are not pressing it; you are confirming it is there and that it does not merely deactivate.
  • What it claims to remove. The confirmation screen or the policy should say whether conversations go with the account, and after how long. Vagueness here is itself the answer.
  • Where the subscription is billed. Store billing or a card on the app's own site. That decides where you go to cancel, and it is the step people skip.
  • What a cancelled account keeps. If cancelling drops you to a free tier, ask whether the history stays. Usually it does, which means cancelling is a pause and deleting is the exit.

An app that passes makes both doors easy: one to stop paying, one to leave entirely, neither buried. It is a low bar that a good number of apps clear, and the app we currently recommend is one of them. The ability to leave cleanly is the thing you are least likely to test and most likely to need.

Questions people ask

Does deleting the app delete my AI girlfriend account?

No. Uninstalling removes the app from your phone and leaves the account, the conversations and, in most cases, the subscription completely intact. You have to cancel the subscription where you bought it and delete the account separately.

If I cancel my subscription, are my chats deleted?

Typically not. Most apps move you to the free tier and keep the history on the server, often with the long-term memory locked rather than erased, so that resubscribing restores it. If you want the conversations gone, delete the account as a separate step.

How long does it take to delete an AI girlfriend app account?

The request is immediate, the erasure usually is not. Many apps run a grace period of a week to thirty days before the data is actually removed, and some identifiers and billing records are kept longer for legal reasons. Check whether you can still log in once the stated window has passed.
